Background & Aspiration

Coming from two different backgrounds -law and anthropology- Evgenia worked for years in the refugee determination field, where her legal expertise, cultural sensitivity, and cross- cultural communication skills were combined to engage effectively and fairly with people in need of protection.

Moving forward, she aspires to take up more research-driven roles where her insights can influence service design or inform socially conscious policies and strategies. She is interested in working with research agencies or consultancies that provide advice and analysis to governments and NGOs, or in directly taking up a research role within an NGO or an independent research centre (e.g. PRIO Cyprus).

Reflection on the Mentorship Program

The mentorship programme offered Evgenia the space and time to reflect on her current professional situation, understand her passions, and decide where she wants to position herself professionally. With the guidance of her mentor, Riane Dragt, she went through an intensive process of self-discovery and empowerment to seek what is meaningful to her. She also discovered that academia is not the only context in which rigorous research can take place. More importantly, she found that there are spaces where ‘anthropologists are - indeed– wanted’, and where her research can be translated into actionable insights and even measurable impact- a realization that now motivates her to pursue opportunities in that direction.
